Access to learning music in Southampton – every Thursday
Expanding on our current work to actively engage with young people in the local community, the SYIMN programme is from 1 to 4pm every Thursday’s for ages 12 to 19, for young people across the Dorset and Hampshire areas who want to commit to developing their music and gain production and recording experience in a professional recording studio.
Placing emphasis on creativity and inclusivity our community project includes high quality music-making activities, providing a nurturing music hub, giving young people opportunities to independently be involved in music afterwards, beyond the project.
Our project also meets our participant’s music orientated social needs working with others singing, playing/learning an instrument, song-writing, music production, music appreciation and band work.
Participants engage in creating original songs, writing lyrics and melodies, developing creative/technical skills in the instrument of their choice. Progressing towards recording and performance.
The SYIMN programme is every Thursday for ages 12 to 19, from 12:30 to 4.30pm. It includes providing the opportunity to have additional free rehearsal time, recording, plus songwriting sessions, production and music lessons including;
- Production lessons
- Drum lessons
- Guitar lessons
- Piano lessons
- Singing lessons

Our project aims to encourage participants to actively create music and lyrics within a group to reduce isolation, encourage expression and communication, nurture self-esteem as well as reduce anxiety by having a positive impact on young people’s engagement by reaching achievable goals developing a skill, writing and recording original songs.
The programme was created to match the needs of the community will provide support to young people who face challenging economic, social or emotional circumstances in their families and communities, those suffering from mental health conditions, young people recovering from drug and alcohol abuse and young people who are not in employment, education or training (NEET), as well as those at risk of becoming NEET.
